Causes and solutions of hydrocyclone wear

The hydrocyclone is a device for fractionation with the aid of centrifugal force. Because of the fine particle size, small footprint, and simple structure of the cyclone, it is often used in the beneficiation industry for the classification of coarse and fine-grained minerals, as well as the dehydration and concentration of slurry. However, the hydrocyclone will also have abrasion problems in use, especially since the grit port and the mining port are more severely worn. Following are the reasons for wear and common solutions.
1. Abrasion caused by the impact of mineral particles on the wall of the cyclone
During the operation of the hydrocyclone, the mineral particles deviate from the flow direction of the flow field under the action of centrifugal force, making a strong rotational movement. Under the violent scouring of the processed ore slurry, the wall surface of the hydrocyclone was impacted and rubbed by mineral particles, causing serious abrasion problems.
Solution
The use of wear-resistant materials is one of the main ways to solve the abrasion of cyclones. Commonly used wear-resistant materials mainly include rubber, alloy cast iron, cast stone, etc. For the problem of serious abrasion on the wall surface of the hydrocyclone, the commonly used method is to line the interior of the hydrocyclone with rubber, cast iron, or coating with wear-resistant materials. Or the entire cyclone is made of wear-resistant rubber, thereby increasing the wear resistance of the hydrocyclone wall.
2. Abrasion of the feed port and grit nozzle
The abrasion of the cyclone is more serious in the grit port and the mini port. The wear of the grit port increases the area of the discharge port, increases the grit output and reduces the concentration, which seriously affects the separation efficiency of the hydrocyclone.
Solution
The easily worn parts such as the grit port and the ore port can be made into replaceable parts, and the wear-resistant protective layer can be prepared on the inner wall of the grit port to reduce the wear of the grit port and the ore port. The optimization of the feeding method of the hydrocyclone is also conducive to alleviating the wear problem of the hydrocyclone.
3. Unreasonable structure causes some local wear
Although the structure of the hydrocyclone is relatively simple and the installation and operation are relatively easy, if the quality of the manufacture or installation of the hydrocyclone is poor or the structure is unreasonable, it will easily cause serious local wear.
Solution
The installation method of the cyclone is mostly vertical, but in fact it can also be inclined or inverted. It must be installed correctly according to the installation instructions of the purchased equipment and under the guidance of the manufacturer of the mineral processing equipment. In order to avoid serious wear and tear of the hydrocyclone due to improper installation, when selecting and purchasing a hydrocyclone, it is necessary to choose a beneficiation equipment manufacturer with strong equipment manufacturing capabilities, installation, and service capabilities.
